Why NLP and hypnosis are different

NLP or as many people know it neuro-linguistic programming is a popular type of support for people who want to improve certain areas of their communication or those who have issues with communicating at times. NLP works by assessing the most effective way of communicating before programming that into us so it is how we always communicate. By doing this we are able to feel more confident as well as achieving the results we want through communication.

Some people believe the use of NLP to be an unethical means of communicating because it is using honed methods in order to achieve the desired results from others. Some have even gone as far as comparing NLP to hypnosis suggesting that they are both an unethical way of persuading others to do things or to think in a certain way.

Hypnosis and NLP are however completely different things. NLP is actually completely ethical however hypnosis is not. NLP simply shows people the different body language and speech methods which they communicate with and how effective they are at achieving the desired reaction in the other participant. It then programmes the person through training to use the effective methods rather than the ineffective.

NLP simply teaches a person how to communicate effectively. In no way does NLP affect the thought process of the other person in a way they can’t control. When a person communicates using methods they have learnt through NLP, the other person can still respond however they want to. This is completely different to hypnosis which is very much dependent on changing the ability of the other person to respond freely.

How hypnosis helps a person achieve what they want is through preventing the other person from responding in any other way than the desired way. This is obviously taking away the other person’s free will and so of course is unethical. This is why NLP and hypnosis are completely different.
